THE WAY IN AS THE WAY OUT
The germ theory of disease is itself diseased; “iatrogenic” is the word the great historian Ivan Illich called it many years ago when speaking of the overmedicalizing of life, which itself becomes the illness. We are now living that in spades.
Another view of disease emerging now, says that it is more important to look at the terrain of the disease. The analogy encompassing these two views is that of dying fish in dirty water. The germ theory of disease treats the fish, while the terrain view cleans the water.
In terms of the Coronavirus, rather than looking to control the virus, the terrain view says that we are starving from the kind of food we eat, and not just the literal food we eat; we are starving for true nourishment. And we are being poisoned, not just by the fact that almost all food is now contaminated with glysophate, that is, Roundup, but by being rounded-up into a conception of the world as a gulag.
The Coronavirus inserts the necessary intimate presence of death at the very heart of consciousness. It is not that we know, or we fear that we will die – that is old content consciousness. The new terrain consciousness is soul -consciousness, soul's inherent concern with death.
The purpose of “death-consciousness” (very different than the consciousness of death) is certainly not to become obsessed with death. To know that death is always with us, which is now being impressed into consciousness itself, has the purpose of awakening us to the wholeness of consciousness as being inherently open to and with the spiritual dimension – that is soul-consciousness. It has nothing, really, to do with “trying to be more spiritual.” It has to do with awakening to the fact that to be fully human is to inherently feel being spiritual-earthly beings.
The overwhelming prevalence, about to go down the toilet, of money-consciousness, obscures the fullness of consciousness itself as inherently “giving-receiving-giving”. This constant pulsation is the constant rhythm of living-dying-living, which is also the rhythm of the heart.
Money-consciousness makes the fullness of consciousness-as-terrain into over-concern with content-consciousness, and not noticing the terrain is polluted. Receiving what we truly need has now turned into the “diseased fish”, the effort to 'save' the economy of greed.
Diseased money – greed – which now characterizes the huge rich-poor polarity, has as its false purpose not having more things, but rather becoming totally forgetful of the constant presence of death. Death-awareness wipes away all literalness of consciousness, for example, the literalized consciousness that happiness comes from things and comfort.
The original soul significance of money as bringing us into relational consciousness has deviated into the fantasy of having life without death, or, turning death into that utterly surprising ending, a very strange view of death as the force of grinding down life to death – which is not its purpose. Death’s purpose is the awakening of consciousness.
These quite phenomenological observations – that is, just seeing what is happening without any intervention of a theory – suggest that we can undergo this current world-initiation into fuller consciousness – either the hard way or the heart way.
The hard way is that of trying to live in dirty water while inoculating all the illnesses -- physical, social, moral, economic, individual.
The heart way opens with feeling our helplessness – the way out of the over-medicalizing of life that is turning into the economy of surveillance – health control rather than health care.
Realizing helplessness opens into the new form of receptive-consciousness, replacing aggressive consciousness. As receptivity awakens, the center of consciousness moves from the brain to the heart, a move from mental knowing to heart-intelligence. Heart-intelligence is also soul awareness.
Soul awareness as it evolves in the way described here enters fully when we become inwardly aware that there Is not one crime in the world to which we are all not subconsciously prone. Within receptive, heart-intelligence, there exists an inherent grieving that grounds us – we are capable of every atrocity that we see happening. There is no moral superiority at the level of soul-awareness.
The grounding of grieving awakens Life-consciousness, that is, we are not fully alive with the partialness of content consciousness. It is time to change the dirty water.
Let’s start the revolution from being human to becoming conscious human beings – homo sapiens (sapiens means WISDOM!)
A Simple Way to Start
Several times a day, take the second two fingers of the right hand (left two if you are left-handed) and begin tapping your breast, right at the center, the heart-felt place of the body. Do this a number of times each day, inwardly noticing that when you do so, an inner sensation of a flow of desire, bodily felt right at that place occurs – this place is the place of the thymus, the inner dwelling place of Sophia, Wisdom. The desire is the desire of Sophia, of Wisdom stirring.
The word “thymus” comes from the Greek word “thumos” which means "anger, heart, soul, desire, life.” When the presence of Sophia is felt, Psyche who in the story of Eros and Psyche begins as a butterfly is felt. When you tap the thymus you feel the stirring of something like a butterfly.
A particularly interesting aspect of the word “thymus” is “anger”, which here means a strong impetus toward LIFE, bodily experienced at the place where no lie can enter.
